• His name is Paulo Condado. (see his homepage)
• He's a scientist in a country which offers no support to scientific research outside the mainstream.
• He has a PhD in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science.
• He envisages the future and its challenges-to-come, is research assistant on the project GeneticLand.
• He has created a special software that makes communication possible for speech-impaired people.
• He has a brilliant mind, and yet, his future is at stake: he faces a very unjust law which allows research (paid for, officially recognised and providing social welfare) to Professors only.  
• Paulo Condado is physically challenged due to cerebral palsy.
• He can't and won't teach in any university because of his speaking problems. 
• He'll be living on scholarships (3 more guaranteed years) - but what about the rest of his life?
  

 

 

«O Paulo quer ser investigador - campo em que é muito bom, mas a lei vigente só permite  que se seja investigador, sendo ao mesmo tempo, professor universitário! Acontece que o Paulo (que sofre de paralisia cerebral)  tem muitas limitações ao nível da fala ... e claro que tem consciência  disso, já pôs  de parte a hipótese de dar aulas na universidade.
Por agora vai continuar na investigação com a bolsa do pós doutoramento da Fundação Ciência e Tecnologia,  durante 3 anos. Não lhe contam como tempo de serviço , não lhe dão direito a usufruir de qualquer sistema de segurança social (ADSE, por ex) ...
Mais 3 anos - e depois? A lei tem que contemplar casos excepcionais. Dentro de 2 anos haverá outra pessoa nas mesmas circunstâncias, um aluno, também com paralisia cerebral, que acabará o doutoramento no Instituto Superior Técnico. O Paulo é mesmo um génio, o país não faz favor nenhum em aproveitá-lo!»

European youth exchange programmes and the English language

Hi, Teacher.

Here are my texts from our Writing Evaluation:

1st - In your opinion, should young people spend time abroad for learning ? Why? / Why not?

I think it's great to spend time abroad, specially young people, so they can learn a little bit more about other countries' culture and meet new people, but, most of all, it's very good for those students' future: not only are they "opening" their horizons, but they will be much better prepared for working in several areas such as Economics, Tourism, Sciences, ...

And it would be good if every country was involved, because in that case, Europe would be a multicultural continent.

2nd - " The EU's language policy promotes multilingualism and aims for a situation in which every EU citizen can speak at least two foreing languages in addition to their mother tongue" - Comment on the relevance of knowing English in this context

Nowadays, English is the most spoken language, and that's because it is used for everything : we learn it at school; there's a lot of sites just in English: for politics, for economy, and so and so on. English ie everywhere. We even use it in our daily routine. We say expressions like " Oh, my God" and others just everyday. We can't help it. And we do that because there's a lot of people speaking English, and, for us to be able to understand each other, we have to speak the same language most of the times. I think it's a really good idea people learn two foreing languages - at least! That's awesoe for our personal development and for our world and future, as workers and citizens.
